“What a talent!  This woman is inside of the music, and she can speak it in our language.  She's vibrant, a great talent and teacher, and can inspire some kinda light even in the darkest of places.   Work with her!  She shines, and you will too.”

Dive in and explore the pleasure of making spontaneous music. Through group singing and other playful exercises we will use melody, harmony, rhythm, spoken word and songs to discover what is vocally possible. This workshop is open to anyone seeking to expand his or her creative potential. Come with your curiosity, and a love for music and community!

Circle Singing
Monday, June 27th, 2011; 7:00pm-9:00pm
Seattle Area Location, TBD
$10-$20 sliding scale

“Circle Singing can be described lots of ways: vocal improvisation, vocal "jamming", add-a-part/change-a-part, vocal orchestra, "voicestra” as created by Bobby McFerrin, a "drum circle" for singers, or just plain "make it up" singing. It's done all over the world in countless different ways and it dates back to the earliest forms of human singing.” - SoVoSo website

Song Circles engage everyone singing, in an improvised choral style where every voice matters and every voice is heard. Come sing! Together, we will create music that is of the moment!

Here’s a taste of us circle singing at a 2008 Montreal Concert led by the incomparable Rhiannon:

Five black women from the United States' past, present - and possible future - search their collective memory and America's changing landscape for a semblance of home. A play with music, The Gift ponders the lingering effects of U.S. slavery on a country and its people. We meet Ayofemi, a young Yoruba woman who dives off of a slave ship in 1789; Rebekka, a slave living in Georgia, 1852; Sophia, a free, mixed-raced woman living in Virginia, circa 1865; Cassiopeia, a middle-aged psychic from the early 21st century, and her granddaughter Itzy born in 2040.
